For decades, contact center agents have relied on Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA) when talking to patients. They ask: “What was the name of your first pet?” or “What street did you grow up on?”
But in the era of industrialized credential theft and massive data leaks, these “secrets” are publicly available for purchase on the dark web.
That means your contact center has become the primary “front door” for attackers. Whether it’s a password reset request or a portal access change, the lack of Identity Provenance — proving the person is who they say they are, not just what they know — is leaving hospitals exposed to HIPAA violations and False Claims Act risks.
The Multi-Million Dollar Reality Check
Healthcare has remained the most expensive industry for data breaches every year since 2011. While the cross-industry average for a breach sits around $4.9 million, healthcare breaches in the last two years have consistently hovered between $9.8 million and $10.9 million.
In just the first half of 2025, over 416 large-scale healthcare data breaches were reported to the OCR, a trend that shows no sign of slowing as AI tools become more accessible to bad actors.
A Technical Attack Plan: The 3-Second Shield
In our latest webinar, “Plug the Leak: How Real Identity Orchestration Recovers Millions,” I talked to Eric Fish, former CLO for the Federation of State Medical Boards, and David Stauffer, NAM Country Manager for Veridas, about how contact center leaders could defend their systems from these attacks.
Here’s the blueprint:
- Establish trust: Anchoring a physical person to a digital record at onboarding.
- Protect trust: Securing every device and channel.
- Scale trust: Using voice biometrics to authenticate a caller in just three seconds of natural conversation.
Strategy Note: See how a unified platform transforms your healthcare infrastructure. Book a Free Strategy Session with David Stauffer.
The results of this shift are two-fold: security and efficiency. Voice biometrics are now 99.9% accurate and can differentiate between a human and a deepfake in real-time. Better yet, by removing the 60–90 second “interrogation” phase of a call, organizations are slashing Average Handling Time (AHT) by a minute.
